Canary Wharf RD1: Ghosal Beats Richards In Two

India’s World No.13 Saurav Ghosal is through to the second round of the St. James’s Place Canary Wharf Classic after he got the better of Englishman Tom Richards on the spectacular glass court at last Wintergarden.

The Indian, who is the only player from his nation to ever reach the top 10 in the World Rankings, took a routine victory to secure his spot in the last 16 in London.

He got the better of Richards in 25 minutes, winning out 11-7, 11-7, to advance to the second round, where he will now face German No.1 Simon Rösner.

“We have grown up through the juniors together so we have played some really good matches. Playing him in his home town is not an ideal scenario but I was just trying to focus on myself and my squash and try to do the things that I want to do, and thankfully I managed to do it.

“It is about understanding what I am good at and trying to do that. Tom is a very good player and the top players don’t let you do what you want to do all the time. You have to stick in and ride the storm out a little bit, and that is every match at this level.”

“When I went back after Pittsburgh to India, I was struggling so bad.. Sleeping at 7:30-ish and waking up at 12am, but thankfully my home club is really accommodating so I could go whenever I really wanted. I like my sleep, so it was not ideal, but you have to find a way!”
