Tournament of Champions RD2: Rosner Advances Against Grayson

12 January 2020

Germany’s World No.7 Simon Rosner got off to a winning start in New York with a straightforward victory over New Zealand’s World No.28 Campbell Grayson at the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions.

The 2018 champion was in sublime form in his opening match of the tournament at Grand Central Terminal as he manoeuvred past Grayson in a tricky first game before comfortably closing out by an 11-8, 11-2, 11-4 margin in 37 minutes.

Next up for Rosner is India’s Saurav Ghosal after he defeated Mexico’s Cesar Salazar in a gruelling five-game battle earlier in the day.

“I thought I played really well considering it’s my first match of the tournament and it can always go a bit slow,” said Rosner afterwards.

“It’s not easy playing last, you need to keep your focus throughout the day and it’s a long day if you play at 9:30 in the evening. I’m really happy with how I played and how I got along with the situation.

“I think I got my game plan quite consistent, I didn’t give him any cheap points and I think that made the difference in the end. If you can keep your focus throughout the whole match and not drop down a mental level then that’s when I’m at my best.”

Result:
[6] Simon Rösner (GER) bt Campbell Grayson (NZL) 3-0: 11-8, 11-2, 11-4 (37m)
