Channel VAS RD1: Selby Dominant Against Salazar

21 November 2019

England’s World No.20 Daryl Selby secured a place in the Channel VAS Championships at St. George’s Hill last 16 after displaying a dominant performance against Mexico’s World No.41 Arturo Salazar.

The 37-year-old was relaxed from the start as he displayed his usual array of exquisite shots to the delight of the crowd as he proved to be too much for 31-year-old Salazar to handle with the Mexican mixing his own superb shots with errors.

The first two games were one sided in the favour of Selby, before Salzar began to put up more of a fight in the third with some well constructed rallies. However, Selby soon regained control and went on to dominate the rest of the game to take an 11-2, 11-3, 11-5 victory in 29 minutes.

Selby will take on PSA World Championship runner-up Paul Coll for a place in the quarter finals.

“As you could see throughout the game, he is a dangerous player,” said England’s Selby afterwards.

“If you leave the ball on his racket then he is a dangerous player. I felt like I played well today, I’m really happy it means that the heartrate didn’t go too high and I didn’t get too stressed.

“My mum comes to watch very seldom as she gets too nervous, so hopefully she wasn’t too nervous tonight.”

Result:
Daryl Selby (ENG) bt Arturo Salazar (MEX) 3-0: 11-2, 11-3, 11-5 (29m)
