Men’s Worlds: Rösner Comes Through Stern Coleman Test

Germany’s Simon Rösner booked his place in round two of the 2019-20 PSA Men’s World Championship but had to come from behind to beat World No.53 Ben Coleman to do so at the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex.

Their previous three fixtures had gone the way of World No.6 Rösner in straight games, but Coleman was able to take a game this time around, and could have had even more had he not squandered three game balls in the opening game.


Coleman caused all sorts of problems for his opponent in the early exchanges as he made the most of a passive opening from the German to go 10-7 up in the first game.

Rösner game back to take five points in a row, but he was dominated in the second by the Englishman, who dropped just four points as he levelled.

The final two games were all Rösner though as he woke up, stepped up the court and finished with aplomb, collecting a pair of 11-2 victories to book his place in the last 32.

“I think I played well overall, I had a bit of an edgy start in the first two games, but then my body language went up and I was more into the game from the third onwards and I’m really happy to get through that one,” said Rösner.


“I just tried to focus on my game more, I was going for shots more. I was playing within myself in the first two games, I wasn’t really playing my own game and I think that’s why I was struggling in the first two.


“Once I stepped up the court that made a big difference.


“I just think from match to match. Every opponent is different, every opponent is good these days, so you have to be focused from the first game. 


“You can lose games quickly as well like I did in the second game, and I think it’s important to be right there and concentrate from match to match rather than thinking too far ahead.”
