Weekend Round-Up: Gillams and Crouin Shock No.1 Seeds In Finals

1 July 2019

Both the Gibraltar Open and the Mulgrave Country Club Victorian Open Championships took place on the Challenger Tour this week, with Angus Gillams and Victor Crouin taking the respective titles.

Gillams, who was part of Scotland’s group at the European Team Championships earlier this year, overcame No.1 seed Martin Svec in the final in Gibraltar.

The World No.128 beat Englishman Ben Coates in the first round, before needing five games to beat No.4 seed Stuart MacGregor in just over an hour to reach the last four.

Gillams then overcame Croatia’s Martin Kegel in the semi finals in four games, and just under an hour to book his spot in the finale in Gibraltar.

The Scot leaves what is just his second tournament of the year with an eighth career title.

Meanwhile, in Australia, Victor Crouin also overcame a No.1 seed, in home favourite Rex Hedrick, to win the fifth title of his PSA World Tour career, without dropping a game all week.

The 20-year-old was in complete control in the final, as he only allowed the Aussie to score eight points in a 36 minute, straight game victory.

To reach the final, Crouin had overpowered Faisal Riaz in the first round, taking just 14 minutes to advance to the quarter finals.

The World No.73 then faced tougher tests from Nicholas Calvert and No.3 seed, and compatriot, Enzo Corigliano, but he was able to get the better of both ahead of his clash with Hedrick.
