The New York Hyder Trophy: El Torkey and Chan Win Titles

7 May 2024

Kareem El Torkey and Chan Sin Yuk claimed glory at The New York Hyder Trophy, beating Jeremias Azaña and Alex Haydon in the respective men’s and women’s finals.

Azaña had recorded an impressive 3-0 win over the in-form Jonah Bryant in the semi-finals, and took a one-game lead over the young Egyptian in this final, taking game one 11-7.

The pair then went toe-to-toe in a nail-biting second game, that would go all the way to a tiebreak, with El Torkey crucially coming out on top.

He took it 13-11 to move back on level terms, and then found himself one game from glory after winning the third 11-7, closing out the victory by winning the fourth 11-8 to get his hands on the trophy.

Still only 19 years of age, El Torkey has now won four titles on the PSA Tour this season, with this week’s 12k success in New York representing his biggest prize to date.

His triumph was followed on the glass court at Open Squash FiDi by the women’s final, which pitted the top two seeds against each other.

No.2 seed Haydon had come through an epic five-game battle with Nour Megahed in the semi-finals, winning games four and five on tiebreaks to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, and she carried that momentum into the early exchanges here, taking game one 11-9.

Chan took the second 11-5 but Haydon moved back in front after three, edging the third 11-9.

But the No.1 seed – a student at Columbia University who was named the 2023/24 Ivy League player of the Year in February – took game four 11-4 to force a decider, and by this stage had momentum on her side.

She controlled much of game five and closed out victory 11-5, securing her eighth PSA Tour title.

The win also extends Chan’s impressive record in PSA finals, with the 21-year-old having now won eight of her 10 matches with the trophy on the line, and each of her last five.
