Asal Moves Up to No.3 in PSA Men’s World Rankings
Egypt’s Mostafa Asal has overtaken Peru’s Diego Elias to return to World No.3 for the first time since November 2023.
Here’s our look at the most notable movers of the week, as of Monday April 29.
Mostafa Asal
Previous Ranking: No.4
New Ranking: No.3
After a slow start to the 2023-24 season by his lofty standards, Mostafa Asal has shown signs of returning to the imperious form that saw him top the rankings at the beginning of last year.
The Egyptian has now appeared in three successive finals – the first time he has done so in his career – and his most recent runner-up finish at the El Gouna International Squash Open has helped him overtake Elias.
Only the man who beat him in El Gouna – Ali Farag – and New Zealand’s Paul Coll now stand above Asal in the rankings.
Joel Makin
Previous Ranking: No.10
New Ranking: No.9
Wales’ Joel Makin has moved up a place to No.9 despite a disappointing second round exit in El Gouna at the hands of Mexico’s Leonel Cardenas, where he squandered a two-game lead.
Fares Dessouky
Previous Ranking: No.16
New Ranking: No.15
Like Makin, Egypt’s Fares Dessouky has also moved up a spot after an exit in the round of 32.
The 29-year-old went down to former World No.1 Karim Abdel Gawad in four games.
Mohamed ElSherbini
Previous Ranking: No.20
New Ranking: No.19
Despite not appearing in El Gouna, Mohamed ElSherbini has moved up a place, with Spain’s Iker Pajares going the other way.
Pajares’ appearance in El Gouna was his 17th tournament of the past 12 months, which has seen his divisor raise to 13, bring his points average below ElSherbini’s.
