Order of Play

Tinne Gilis v Nour El Sherbini

The first semi-final of the evening sees World No.1 Nour El Sherbini take on World No.9 Tinne Gilis for a spot in the title decider.

This will be the second time in her career that Gilis will be competing in a Platinum level semi-final after the Belgian No.2 overcame Salma Hany in a back-and-forth five-game duel in the previous round. However, if she is to charter unfamiliar grounds and reach the final, she will have to record her first career victory over the ‘Warrior Princess’, having lost all of their six meetings to date.

El Sherbini, meanwhile, has looked in imperious form so far this event, defeating Rachel Arnold, Nada Abbas and Rowan Elaraby on her way to the semi-final, dropping just one game along the way.

A potential 7th title of the season awaits El Sherbini at El Gouna, and Gilis will have to produce one of the performances of her career to stop her in her tracks.

Tarek Momen v Ali Farag

A first semi-final appearance since the US Open last October awaits No.8 seed Tarek Momen, with his same opponent from that day, World No.1 Ali Farag, once again standing in his way. On that occasion, it was Farag who came through a tense five-gamer, 11-9 in the decider, with the top seed having also won 19 of their 23 meetings on tour.

Momen was in top form in the previous round to stun World No.3 Diego Elias in straight games, but the Egyptian will be lacking match practice on the all-glass court in El Gouna, with this previous match having been moved to the traditional court due to adverse weather conditions.

Meanwhile, Farag delivered a superb performance in defeating Mohamed ElShorbagy in three games in the quarter-finals, having recorded previous victories over Curtis Malik and Nicolas Mueller in the opening two rounds.

After losing out in the Black Ball Open final last week, Farag has looked determined to get back to winning ways this week, and it will take a monumental effort from Momen to stop him from continuing his quest for title No.7 of the season.

Nouran Gohar v Georgina Kennedy

Fresh off the back of victory at the Black Ball Open last week, World No.2 Nouran Gohar has continued her impressive recent form, powering her way through a tough draw – recording wins over London Classic winner Sivasangari Subramaniam, World No.13 Amina Orfi, and World No.7 Olivia Weaver.

World No.6 Georgina Kennedy will be the player attempting to bring this run to an end, and in the process, reach her maiden Platinum final. The Englishwoman was at her best last night to knock out Egypt’s Nour El Tayeb in five games.

Despite being on court for five games, Kennedy’s victory only took two minutes longer than Gohar’s, so she shouldn’t be at any disadvantage physically entering the match.

In their five meetings on the PSA Tour to date, Kennedy is yet to record a single game against Gohar, so ‘The Terminator’ will fancy her chances of reaching her fifth consecutive final at the El Gouna International.

Karim Abdel Gawad v Mostafa Asal

World No.5 Karim Abdel Gawad and World No.4 Mostafa Asal will contest the final match of the evening, with this being the pair’s second semi-final meeting in as many weeks.

Last week at the Black Ball Open, it was Asal who came through after five games and 73 minutes of action, bringing their head-to-head record to two wins apiece.

Both Egyptians will be full of confidence coming into the match, with Asal having having carried on his impressive form that saw him defeat World No.1 Farag on his way to the Gold-level title last week, and Gawad having taken down World No.2 Paul Coll in three games last night.

Another five-gamer is by no means out of the question here, with this evenly-matched encounter looking a justified curtain closer to semi-finals night.
