David Hails Sivasangari’s “Amazing” career step after London Classic victory

9 April 2024

Eight-time World Champion Nicol David believes Sivasangari Subramaniam has taken an “amazing” step in her career after the Malaysian No.1 captured her first-ever PSA World Tour Gold title at the London Squash Classic earlier this month.

Sivasangari, 25, produced some of the best squash of her career at Alexandra Palace, London, to win the 14th PSA Tour trophy of her career – knocking out World No.1 Nour El Sherbini, World No.4 Nele Gilis, and World No.2 Hania El Hammamy en route to the title.

Sivasangari’s story is made all the more remarkable considering she spent eight months out of the game between June 2022 and February 2023 after being involved in a career-threatening road accident, but since returning, has managed to return to the peak of her powers.

Her success in the English capital has seen Sivasangari rise to a career-high ranking of World No.13, and has left her well on the way to breaking into the world’s top 10 players – a position that no Malaysian has held since David herself hung up the racket in 2019.

David, former World No.1 and 81-time winner on tour, admitted that this victory could be a springboard for further success for Sivasangari, giving her compatriot her best wishes moving forward.

She said: “I believe this is an amazing step for Sivasangari towards reaching her goals by winning her first PSA Gold event. Big first wins mean a lot, and they have the power to build the belief that you can reach and beat the top players.

“I really want to wish her the very best as she takes on this journey to write her own story and will be cheering for her always.”
