Hany Defeats Home Favourite In Clinical Performance

5 April 2024

Egypt’s Salma Hany produced a sensational performance against Germany’s Saskia Beinhard to progress to the semi-finals of the 2024 German Open.

The Egyptian looked comfortable throughout the match, controlling the tempo of the match and producing winner after winner that went unanswered.

While Beinhard managed to put up resistance to the Egyptian onslaught in the first game, after Hany won 11-8 take a 1-0 lead, the No.4 seed only leaked three points in the second and third match (11-2, 11-1) to quickly earn her spot in the semi-finals where she faces top seed Nele Gilis.

“I’ve never played Saskia [Beinhard] before and she’s had an amazing week, she’s been playing really well,” said Hany after the match. “I prepared quite well for this match and I was ready for a fight. She came through very strong in the first game and I couldn’t let the crowd be too involved today because they were quite loud! I’m glad I managed to win that first and apply my game plan.

“I had a really good week in Australia – it was nice and I played some good squash. This is a new week and a new tournament and I’m looking forward to bringing on more great squash. It’s great to have my coach here and I’m looking forward to getting on court again tomorrow.

“Me and Nele [Gilis] go way back – we played all the way through the junior years. Last time we played was in El Gouna last year, it was a battle and I’m really looking forward to it tomorrow.”
