Canadian Open SF: Elias Dominates Farkas

7 March 2024

Diego Elias is through to his third final of 2024 after taking down Farkas Balazs in a one-sided Canadian Men’s Open presented by AirSprint Private Aviation semi-final.

Farkas has wowed the Bow Valley Athletic Club crowd this week with some outrageous attacking play that has seen him upset No.4 seed Abdulla Al Tamimi and No.7 seed Dimitri Steinmann.

Today, however, he had no answer to a devastatingly efficient Elias.

The Peruvian took complete control of the match early on, blowing Farkas away 11-2 in the opener.

The World No.3 quickly doubled his lead, punishing Farkas’ conservative court positioning with frequent counter drops on the way to an 11-3 win.

The third game followed a similar pattern, with Elias easing through to the final with another 11-3 victory.

Afterwards, Elias said: “I’ve been playing my best squash this week, I’ve been going 100 percent and I think that’s helping me get off in three games as quickly as possible and save energy for tomorrow.

“I’m playing great squash, all the players I’ve played are very good and a few have been playing their best squash this week. I just wanted to show them that there are a few more levels and I hope they can keep improving.

On who he would rather play tomorrow, Youssef Soliman or Mazen Hesham, he said: “I think it’s going to be a tough one between them. They will both be tough tomorrow; I don’t who I’d prefer to play because they’re both playing good squash. I just hope they kill each other today!”
