Canadian Men’s Open QF: Hesham Survives Wilhemi Test

6 March 2024

Mazen Hesham is through to the last four of the Canadian Men’s Open Presented by AirSprint Private Aviation after a testing encounter with Switzerland’s Yannick Wilhelmi.

Wilhelmi made a rapid start to the match, taking the first seven points of game one to leave Hesham reeling.

On form, however, ’the Falcon’ is capable of overturning even the most daunting of deficits, and so it proved as the No.2 seed wrestled momentum in his favour to take the opener 11-9.

Wilhemi led in the second game, too, but was once again reeled in by the Egyptian, with Hesham moving 2-0 up with another 11-9win before pushing on in the third, which he took 11-9 yet again.

Afterwards, Hesham said: “Yannick played really well all week, so I knew what to expect today.

“I think I could have played a bit better at the end of the second and start of the third, but it’s been building up through the tournament and hopefully can be better tomorrow.

“Sometimes I have to tell myself ‘just stop hitting the tins, that’s enough of this shot, or play more aggressively’ or I’ll point to the back of the court to be able to focus on the back and I did it a bit too much at the end but I still kept my composure and was lucky to finish in three!”
