Paul Coll Overtakes Diego Elias to Return to World No.2

4 March 2024

For the first time since December 2022, New Zealand’s Paul Coll is back at World No.2. The 31-year-old has overtaken Peru’s Diego Elias to move next to World No.1 Ali Farag, after a strong performance at the Windy City Open 2024. Despite not being able to defend his title, Coll pushed runaway World No.1 Farag to four games and made life difficult for the Egyptian.

Coll had a very tricky draw in Chicago, facing 2022 runner-up Youssef Ibrahim in his opening match in round two, then defeating French duo Baptiste Masotti both 3-0, before despatching the always dangerous Mostafa Asal also in straight games. The form that the Commonwealth Champion has shown this season is well deserving of the No.2 position.

Coll has some serious ground to make up if he is to try and catch the World No.1 Ali Farag, who after claiming his second Windy City Open title, has moved over 1,000 points clear of Coll at the summit of the World Rankings. Farag is operating at the highest level that we’ve ever seen on the PSA World Tour as his points average is the highest ever recorded.

Egypt’s Mazen Hesham has never reached the top five in the world before and after many impressive performances this season, the maverick has put himself just 74 points behind Karim Abdel Gawad and with many more big events to come this season, the Black Falcon could make a big push to reach the milestone.

Further down the rankings, Colombian Miguel Rodriguez and Spain’s Iker Pajares have risen two places as Egypt;s Youssef Ibrahim falls two places.
