Challenger Tour Roundup: Seeds Fall in Toronto & Play Commences in Calgary

22 February 2024

The two events taking place on the Challenger Tour this week both come from Canada, the Goodfellow Classic in Toronto and the MRU Open in Calgary.

The Goodfellow Classic has reached the quarter final stage as round two concluded yesterday at the Toronto Athletic Club. No.2 seed Alfredo Avila was unfortunately forced to withdraw in his clash with compatriot Cesar Segundo Corona, who was a surprise second round entrant. Top seed Abhay Singh defeated Wildcard Elliot Hunt in three games to progress to the last eight.

No.3 seed and home favourite Salah Eltorgman saw his tournament come to an end as he was also forced to retire injured. The Canadian won the opening game against Abdelrahman Abdelkhalek but started to show signs of struggling in game two as he lost 11-3. The No.3 seed went 8-0 down in the third game and called time on the match, sending the Egyptian through to the quarter finals.

There was one home winner on the opening day as Brett Schille defeated younger brother Tyson to progress. Brett was in complete control of the sibling affair, winning in 24 minutes, 11-4, 11-4, 11-6. Brett will now face Hong Kong’s No.7 seed Wong Chi Him for a spot in the last eight.
