Challenger Tour Player Of The Month: El Torkey And Singh Win January Awards

2 February 2024

Teenage duo Kareem El Torkey and Anahat Singh have won the PSA Challenger Tour Player of the Month awards for January, following a vote on social media.

Egypt’s El Torkey scooped the men’s prize after a successful month in which he reached two finals, winning the Lethbridge ProAm before finishing as runner-up in the Gas City Open.

The Lethbridge ProAm title was the third of El Torkey’s career and his second in succession, after winning the SODIC Squash Open on home soil in December.

Those results also helped him move up inside the world’s top 100 for the first time in his career, ending the month at a career-high of No.92 in the world.

The 19-year-old beat out competition from France’s Brice Nicolas – his opponent in both of those finals – to claim the award, gaining 45% of the vote to Nicolas’ 33%, with Hong Kong’s Wong Chi Him coming in third.

The women’s award went to rising Indian star Singh after she collected the first PSA Challenger Tour trophy of her career.

Still only 15, Singh went into the JSW Willingdon Little Masters & Senior Tournament on the back of a run to the British Junior Open final, and she produced a dominant display on home soil, winning the event without dropping a game.

Even more impressive is the fact that this was Singh’s first Challenger Tour event since 2022 and just her third overall.

The social media poll reflected that achievement, too, as Singh received nearly 42% share of the votes, with Nardine Garas, Caroline Fouts and Toby Tse all receiving either 19% or 20%.
