SmartCentres Kinetic Florida Open: Asal Crushes Bonmalais in Dominant Win

13 January 2024

Mostafa Asal denied Sebastein Bonmalais another upset win, dominating the Frenchman in a crushing 3-0 win.

Bonmalais had produced what he described as the ‘best performance of his career’ to beat No.7 seed Miguel Rodriguez in round two, but he was outclassed from start to finish by the ‘Raging Bull’.

The young Egyptian lost only four points across the first two games, with his barrage of pace and pressure too much for Bonmalais to handle.

It wasn’t all about pace and power for Asal though, with Chris Gordon describing the subtly in his game as being ‘of the highest order’, and he didn’t have to wait long to wrap up victory.

An extravangant ‘tweener at 9-5 brought up five match balls but he only needed one, slamming a forehand crosscourt to wrap up the win.

“I’ve felt like the last three or four tournaments, my head was not there,” he said on court after the win.

“But actually, the World Teams was really nice for me and put me in some huge tests, so at least I’m mentally back a little bit and I’m pleased with the way I’m playing.

“Sebastien’s an amazing player, he just had one of the best matches of his career yesterday so I needed to be sharp. He’s an awesome player with his touches and his speed.”

Result: [2] Mostafa Asal (EGY) bt Sebastien Bonmalais (FRA) 3-0: 11-3, 11-1, 11-5 (38m)
