Harrogate Open: Harris to Meet Marshall Again, Carter Sets Up Bryant Final
Jared Carter ended Chris Simpson’s run at the Harrogate Open to set up a final against Jonah Bryant, while Asia Harris and Kiera Marshall will meet for the women’s title.
Simpson – a former World No.20 who retired from professional squash in 2019 – had produced an impressive run to the semi-finals after coming into the tournament as a late replacement.
He knocked out Jack Mitterer and Rory Richmond either side of a round-two win over No.1 seed Abdelrahman Abdelkhalek, but the final was a step too far, with Carter proving to be too strong.
The 22-year-old won 3-0 in 45 minutes to progress into Saturday’s final, where he was later joined by Bryant.
The rising star has won his last two 3k events and moved within one victory of a third by sweeping aside New Zealand’s Joel Arscott.
Bryant dropped only 10 points in what was a dominant display, rounding off a semi-finals day which had earlier seen the top two women’s seeds reach the final.
No.1 seed Asia Harris was the first to book her spot, gaining revenge on the in-form Nour Megahed after being beaten by the Egyptian at The Northern Joe Cup two weeks ago.
Having cruised through game one, winning it 11-2, Harris was pegged back when Megahed took the second, but the young English star came out on top in two tight games from there, sealing her spot in the ninth PSA Tour final of her career.
Her opponent there will be compatriot Marshall, who is hoping to make it fifth time lucky after losing each of her four previous PSA Tour finals.
Like Harris, the 22-year-old reached the final in Harrogate by winning her semi-final 3-1 after losing the second game, beating Scotland’s Ellie Jones 11-6, 9-11, 11-3, 11-6.
The pair will now go head-to-head for the fifth time on tour and the second time in a final, with Harris having beaten Marshall in last year’s L’International des Mirabelles final, and then three further times since.
