Nour El Sherbini v Amanda Sohby

The day’s proceedings start with an action-packed contest between the World No.1 and the US No.1.

Egypt’s Nour El Sherbini survived a scare in on her journey to the semi final against Hong Kong’s Chin Sin Yuk who drew level at 7-7 in the fifth against the No.1 seed. The ‘Warrior Princess’ saw off Japan’s Satomi Watanabe in their quarter final match-up in four games.

Amanda Sobhy took out Egyptian prodigy Amina Orfi in comfortable fashion for her third round clash, before moving on to face World No.9 Tinne Gilis in her quarter final. Despite the Belgian coming back twice, the American won out in the fifth game.

El Sherbini and Sobhy have met on 17 occasions, with the 28-year-old winning 12 of the matches. Their most recent clash came in April’s British Open, where the Egyptian beat the 30-year-old in five games.

Ali Farag v Mostafa Asal

The first men’s semi final is an all-Egyptian affair as World No.1 Ali Farag takes on World No.3 Mostafa Asal.

The No.1 seed comes into the match having won two of the three Platinum tournaments so far this season, losing out on the U.S. Open in the gruelling 98-minute final against New Zealand’s Paul Coll.

Farag has yet to drop a game so far this tournament, seeing off the likes of England’s Patrick Rooney and No.6 seed Mazen Hesham in the process.

Asal has faced some difficult names on the route to the semi final. The young Egyptian has battled Youssef Ibrahim and Youssef Soliman, before what could have proved to be a difficult quarter final against former World champion Tarek Momen, until his fellow Egyptian retired due to illness.

The World champion has a dominant head-to-head record with the ‘Raging Bull’, winning 14 of their 18 encounters, however in their most recent clash in the World Tour finals, Asal claimed victory in straight games.

Nele Gilis v Hania El Hammamy

World No.4 Nele Gilis is in position to reach her second final in a row after claiming victory at the Singapore Open in November. The Belgian has had a successful season so far, earning the highest World ranking of her career so far.

The 27-year-old defeated her round three opponent Sarah-Jane Perry in five games despite holding a 2-0 lead over the Englishwoman. Her quarter final match came against an in-form Sivasangari Subramaniam who recently won the Hong Kong Football Club Open. Gilis defeated the Malaysian in four games.

Hania El Hammamy has also had a successful season, winning the Qatar Classic in September as well as reaching two other finals. The Egyptian has faced difficult opponents on her way to the semi finals in the form of Sabrina Sobhy, Zeina Mickawy and Rowan Elaraby.

The 23-year-old holds a convincing eight out of nine record in head-to-head matches, with her mist recent victory coming at Switzerland’s Grasshopper Cup in October.

Mohamed ElShorbagy v Paul Coll

England’s Mohamed ElShorbagy survived a brutal five-game battle with younger brother Marwan ElShorbagy, during which Mohamed had a medical timeout for a hip injury.

New Zealand’s Paul Coll has faced difficult opponents on his run to the semi final. The New Zealander took out France No.1 Victor Crouin in straight games in his round three clash, then faced World No.2 Diego Elias in the quarter final.

Despite the Peruvian being fresh from his third round match being cut short when Karim Abdel Gawad retired injured, Coll didn’t drop a single game as he dispatched the South American for the second time this season.

ElShorbagy holds a strong advantage in the pair’s head-to-head matches, winning 14 out of 19 of the occasions, most recently in the World Tour Finals
