Challenger Tour Round-Up: Khan & Douglas to Contest Denver Final, Bryant & Haworth Through in Purley

18 November 2023

Grizzly Bear Bourbon Mile High 360 Squash Classic

It will be No.2 seed versus No.3 in the Grizzly Bear Bourbon Mile High 360 Squash Classic final, after Faraz Khan and Andrew Douglas came through their semi-finals.

No.3 seed Douglas beat Cesar Salazar to reach the final, winning 3-1 in a match which saw all four games end 11-9, while Khan beat Wong Chi Him 11-8, 11-7, 11-9 in just 39 minutes.

The pair will now face off for the trophy, with Khan targeting a second successive title after winning in Vancouver last week.

Bondi Open

Sarah Cardwell and Nicholas Calvert kept hopes of an Australian double alive at the Bondi Open, both winning their quarter-final matches.

Women’s top seed Cardwell beat fellow Ausralian Sze Yu Lee 3-1 to set up a semi-final clash with Malaysia’s Sehveetrraa kumar, but there will be no all-Australian final, after No.2 seed Sophie Fadaely lost out to another Malaysian player – Thanusaa Uthrian – in the bottom half of the draw.

Calvert, the men’s No.2 seed, saw off compatriot Brendan MacDonald in his last-eight matchup, winning 11-9, 11-3, 11-6 in 37 minutes. Like Cardwell, Calvert will have to get past a Malaysian opponent to reach the final, with fourth seed Hafiz Zhafri standing in his way.

Curitiba Squash Center Brazil Open

Brazil’s Diego Gobbi remained on course for back-to-back titles on home soil, beating Vinicius Torres Berbel in the Curitiba Squash Center Brazil Open quarter-finals.

Gobbi came into this tournament having won the RGSA Open De Squash last week, and is yet to drop a game in Curitiba this week, adding a 3-0 win over Berbel to his comfortable victory over Gustavo Klassen in round two.

Gobbi will now play Pedro Mometto in an all-Brazilian semi-final, with another home favourite, Rhuan Sousa, hoping to make it past Paraguay’s Francesco Marcantonio in the bottom half of the draw.

Telsa Media David Lloyd Purley Open

British junior champion Jonah Bryant also remains on course for his second successive PSA Tour title, reaching the Telsa Media David Lloyd Purley Open.

The 18-year-old claimed his first PSA Tour title at the Wye Valley Brewery Stourbridge Open in October, and backed that up by claiming the British junior title in Sheffield, but now has his sights set on another trophy in the English capital

Bryant beat Michael Andrews 3-0 in his quarter-final and will now play No.8 seed Jack Mitterer, who upset Noah Meredith in the last eight. Robert Downer and Will Salter will contest the other semi-final.

There remains a possibility of seeing both British junior champions lifting silverware in this event too, with girls U19 champion Amelie Haworth also through to the last four.

Haworth is unseeded for this event but needed just 17 minutes to beat No.5 seed Sanne Veldkamp in the quarter-finals, dropping just 15 points along the way.

Haworth’s semi-final opponent will be No.2 seed Hana Ismail, with Alison Thomson and Breanne Flynn set to compete the other semi-final.
