Monte Carlo Classic: Turmel Crowned After Whitlock Withdrawal

10 November 2023

England’s Lucy Turmel has been crowned champion of the 2023 Monte Carlo Classic, with her opponent in the final, Emily Whitlock, unable to compete due to an injury.

Whitlock had come through five testing games in her semi-final win over Georgia Adderley, fighting back from 7-3 down in the fifth to book her spot in the final.

That win came at a cost, though, as she suffered an injury that she was unable to recover from in time for the final, handing Turmel her sixth PSA Tour trophy without a point being played.

Despite not winning the way she would have wanted, Turmel can still reflect on a successful week, dropping only one game en route to the final.

That followed a runner-up finish at the SA Open last week, and this success represents a second 20k win of 2023, following victory at the Calgary CFO Consulting Services PSA Womens Squash Week in March.

Turmel will now look to carry the momentum gained from this fortnight into her next event, the TTI Milwaukee Hong Kong Squash Open, where she will face Hong Kong’s Ka Yi Lee in round one, with an all-English match against either Katie Malliff or Grace Gear awaiting should she progress.

Result: Women’s Final

[2] Lucy Turmel (ENG) bt [1] Emily Whitlock (WAL) 3-0: 0-0 retired (0m)
