Monte Carlo Classic: Adderley Upsets Metwally to Reach Semis

9 November 2023

Scotland’s Georgia Adderley upset No.3 seed Mariam Metwally to reach the Monte Carlo Classic semi-finals.

The Egyptian had edged a five-game thriller in the pair’s only previous meeting, winning 3-2 in El Gouna this year, but was unable to repeat the feat in Monaco, retiring midway through game three as an injury hampered her movement.

Sixth seed Adderley had dominated proceedings up to that point and looked set for a comfortable victory even before the retirement, sitting just five points from victory at 11-4, 11-6, 6-2 up.

She will now face Wales’ Emily Whitlock for a place in the final, after the No.1 seed cruised past Millie Tomlinson 11-4, 11-4, 11-9 in their quarter-final.

The bottom half of the draw will see second seed Lucy Turmel take on No.4 seed Hana Moataz, with Turmel targeting a second straight 20k final after finishing as runner-up in the SA Open last week.

Turmel needed four games to overcome France’s Enora Villard, but ran away with victory in the end.

Locked at one game apiece after two, Turmel took the reins at 5-4 in the third, winning the next six points to close out game three, before dominating game four, winning it 11-1 to reach the final four.

That match was second on court, and followed Moataz’s straight-games win over No.7 seed Grace Gear.

The young Egyptian is ranked just six places above Gear in the world, but came out firing from the off and never let up, not dropping more than seven points in any of the three games.
