Challenger Tour Round-Up: Chotrani and Yee Win Second Straight Titles

1 November 2023

PVD Squash RI Open

Veer Chotrani won his second tour title in succession, beating Australia’s Joseph White in the PVD Squash RI Open final.

Chotrani was seeded two places lower than his opponent, but arguably came into the final as the favourite, having won the Greenwich Open a week earlier.

He had also dropped just one game en route to this final, and carried that imperious form into the matchup with White, cruising to a 3-0 win to get his hands on the trophy.

Burnt Squash Open

Egypt’s Abdelrahman Nassar claimed the Burnt Squash Open men’s title in Lakeland, seeing off Pakistan’s Ahsan Ayaz in the final.

Nassar, the No.2 seed, had already had to weather a 75-minute battle with Mohamed Sharaf in the quarter-finals, before beating Babatunde Ajagbe in the semi-finals, and needed a tie-break to win the opening game in this final.

The next two were more straightforward, though, ending 11-8, 11-5 to secure Nassar the trophy.

In the women’s draw, Xin Ying Yee wrapped up her second title in a row, producing a stunning comeback to beat Malak Taha 3-2 in the final.

Yee made the worst possible start, dropping games one and two 11-7, 11-9, but turned things round in the third, taking it 11-8.

She won game four by the same scoreline to take the match to a decider, which she won 11-7 to secure glory.

Oregon Open

The Oregon Open got underway in Portland yesterday, with all but one of the [9/16] seeds making it through to round two.

England’s Mark Broekman was the only exception, suffering a five-game upset at the hands of American wild card Gordon Lam, who was playing his first ever PSA Tour match.

Top seed Faraz Khan and No.2 seed Spencer Lovejoy also discovered their round-two opponents, with Jamie Ruggiero beating Sven Stettler to set up a meeting with Khan, while Mitchell Kahnert overcame Amin Khan to book a clash with Lovejoy.
