Georgia Open: Vargas Sinks Avila to Win Eighth Tour Title

16 October 2023

Colombia’s Juan Camilo Vargas claimed his first title of 2023 by beating Alfredo Avila in the Georgia Open final.

The World No.57 came into this event having reached the semi-finals of his last two tournaments, but went one better in Atlanta by knocking out Sanjay Jeeva on day four.

Standing between him and the trophy on finals day was a man who had won his last event in No.4 seed Avila, who claimed the Copa Mexico Temazcal earlier this month.

The Mexican did, however, make the worst possible start to this one, losing the first game 11-2, but found his feet in the second, edging it 11-9 to level things up.

Games three and four were both tight affairs, with some lengthy rallies meaning the match went well past the hour mark, but it was Vargas who came out on top in both, securing a 3-1 victory in 75 minutes to get his hands on the trophy.

The win represents an eighth PSA Tour title and a first on US soil since 2018 for the Colombian.

Result: Final

[3] Juan Camilo Vargas (COL) bt [4] Alfredo Avila (MEX) 11-2, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7 (75m)
