Challenger Tour Round-Up: El Torkey Wins, Avila Cruises Through

29 September 2023

No.1 seed Kareem El Torkey continued his quest for a first PSA Tour title, cruising past fellow Egyptian Abdul-Rahman Elnady to reach the semi-finals of the 3rd Bangabandhu Squash Tournament Presented by Ispahani.

El Torkey, who reached the semi-finals of the Springfield Scottish Squash Open last week, needed just 18 minutes to see off his compatriot, dropping only 15 points.

He will now face Dutch No.6 seed Sebastiaan Hofman in the last four.

The No.1 seeds are also through in both the men’s and women’s draws at the KCC PSA Challenge Cup 2 in Hong Kong.

Men’s top seed Matthew Lai needed all five games to get past Andes Ling, but he will not be joined in the semi-finals by second seed Harley Lam or third seed Chung Yat Long.

Lam went down 3-1 to Malaysia’s Hafiz Zhafri, while Chung fell to Wailok To, who is yet to drop a game in the tournament.

Across the Pacific Ocean, round two of the Copa Mexico Temazcal concluded, with all but two of the seeds progressing through.

Mexico’s Bryan Cueto and Colombia’s Felipe Tovar were the seeded players to go out, losing to Edgar Zayas and Juan Pablo Gómez Ochoa respectively.

There were no such troubles for the top two seeds, though, with both Alfredo Avila and Ronald Palomino winning inside 25 minutes.
