QuantiFi Lifetime Metrowest 2023: Sharaf Downs Top Seed to Continue Run

29 August 2023

Egypt’s Mohamed Sharaf continued his terrific run at the QuantiFi Lifetime Metrowest as he downed top seed Jeremías Azaña, recovering from 2-0 down to make his way into the semi-finals of the Challenger 6 event.

Argentine Azaña was dominant in the opening two games, winning 11-7, 11-5 to set himself up with a 2-0 lead and place one foot in the last four. The 21-year-old Egyptian battled back however and showed great fighting spirit to take the third game 11-8 before forcing a fifth game, winning 11-3 in the fourth. The fifth game was tight throughout but it was the Egyptian who played the big points better and got ahead in the tiebreak, closing the game out 13-11 to reach the semis.

He’ll face another surprise participant in the semi-finals in the form of compatriot Abdelrahman Nassar, who scored a win over No.3 seed Mohamed Nabil. Nassar found himself level at 1-1 in the contest but found top form to take the next two games 11-6 to gatecrash the final four.

The other semi-final will be played between the No.2 and 4 seeds Sanjay Jeeva and Veer Chotrani, who recorded wins over Yusuf Elsherif and Nicolas Serna in their quarter final matches to reach the final four.
