Windsor City Open: Stefanoni & Crowne Claim Titles

20 August 2023

USA’s Marina Stefanoni and Canada’s George Crowne were victorious on finals day at the Windsor City Open as they overcame Egypt’s Nour Heikal and Canada’s Brett Schille in four games to claim the titles.

Women’s top seed Stefanoni was denied a final against her sister as Heikal overcame Lucie Stefanoni in the semi-finals and it looked as though Heikal could be defeating both sisters in consecutive days after taking the opening game 11-9 by paying accurate, aggressive squash. Stefanoni regrouped however and then put together three terrific games from there to stay in control on court and not let the talented Heikal back in the contest. The American tookmgame four 11-8 to claim the title, a seventh of her career.

In the men’s Challenger 6 final, a maiden home winner was guaranteed as George Crowne took on Brett Schille in both of their first PSA finals. Schille looked the more nervous of the two in the opening game and didn’t get going at all as Crowne raced to an 11-2 win. The second game was more competitive but it was Crowne again who held the upper hand and hung on for a 12-10 win to lead 2-0.

Despite Schille battling back to win game three 11-4, Crowne bounced back strongly to win the fourth 11-9 and claim his first PSA title.
