The Hague Open: Doughty & Elkattan Join Seeds In Quarters

England’s Lewis Doughty and Egypt’s Omar Elkattan scored upsets on day two of The Hague Open yesterday as they overcame European duo Nilo Vidal and Laszlo Godde to reach the quarter finals.

Doughty was in fine form in his match and completely controlled proceedings from the outset. The Englishman took the first two games 11-5, 11-7 to set up a commanding lead and then was ruthless in game three as he won 11-0 to reach the final eight. His opponent in the quarter finals will be top seed Mahesh Mangaonkar, who defeated Will Salter in half an hour.

Egypt’s Omar Elkattan is always capable of upsetting the seedings given his attacking and aggressive style of play and did so again yesterday as he overcame Frenchman Laszlo Godde. Elkattan steamrolled the first game, winning 11-1 in no time at all. Godde was more competetive in the next two games but struggled to deal with the pace of the match which allowed the Egyptian to win games three and four 11-7, 11-4 and advance to the next round.

The most local player left in the draw now is Belgium’s Joeri Hapers, who needed all five games to defeat Germany’s Jan Wipperfürth. Hapers took a 2-1 lead in the match by wining the third game 11-8 but was pegged back again by the German, who won game four 11-7. The Belgian No.1 hung tough in the decider, closing it out by a tight 11-9 scoreline to avoid an early exit.
