Costa North Coast Open: Chung Yat Long Produces Sole Upset On Day 2 in Coffs Harbour

Day two of the Costa North Coast Open saw just one upset, which came in the men’s draw as Hong Kong’s Chung Yat Long overcame No.8 seed Rhys Dowling in four games. Dowling had recently been forced to withdraw from a tournament and after two close games with Long which were shared, Long seemed to take advantage and pull away as he won 11-5, 11-3 in the final two games to record the 3-1 win.

The leading Australian in the draw, Joseph White, was forced to dig deep to come through his match against India’s Suraj Kumar Chand. The No.4 seed found himself 2-1 behind as Chand converted the second and third games both in tiebreaks 12-10 to give himself a great chance of an upset. White hung tough to close out game four 11-9 to force a fifth game and looked to have taken too much out of Chand as he comfortably took the decider 11-5 to avoid an early exit.

Scotland’s Alasdair Prott recently claimed his first title on the PSA Tour but suffered an early exit in his last event in Tasmania, losing in round two. He was again in danger of an early exit as he found himself at 2-2 with fellow European Miguel Mathis from Switzerland. There was no tension in the deciding game however as Prott moved through the gears to take it 11-5 and reach the quarter finals.

There were no seedings upsets as the women’s event got underway. Only three matches went to four games with the rest all being straight games victories for the seeded players. Aussie duo Sarah Cardwell and Alex Haydon recorded 3-1 wins against Madison Lyon and Noor Ul Huda to reach the quarter finals.

The quarter finals are set to throw up some interesting match ups as No.3 seed Chan Yiwen faces Malaysia’s Yasshmita Jadishkumar in what is sure to be an exciting and close match. Whilst an all-Australian battle between Alex Haydon and Sarah Cardwell could go either way with the top two seeds looking to be strong at either end of the draw.
