Costa North Coast Open: Turner Downs Calvert In Coffs Harbour RD1

17 August 2023

The Costa North Coast Open Coffs Harbour 2023 got underway yesterday as men’s round one concluded with the only upset coming in an all Australian clash between David Turner and Nicholas Calvert, in which Turner prevailed in four games. Turner took the two first games 11-6 and despite Calvert reducing the deficit to one game, Turner responded strongly to take game four 11-3 and book his place in the last 16 of the Challenger 12 event.

“I’m very happy with my performance. I executed my game plan and stood up when I needed to. I’m happy to see the hard work paying off and I’m excited for the next one!” said Turner afterwards.

The longest match of the day came from another all-Australian clash as James Lloyd defeated wildcard Oscar Curtis in a five game thriller to advance. Lloyd claimed a tight third game 13-11 to lead 2-1 but a strong fight back from Curtis in the fourth forced a decider between the two. The higher seeded Llyod battled hard in the final game and eventually managed to steal the game 11-9 to avoid an upset and reach the second round.

Recent City of Devonport Open winner Elijah Thomas was back in action and didn’t have things all his own way against Tate Zak Norris but managed to close out three tight games 11-9, 12-10, 12-10 to move into round two, where he will be up against India’s talented No.3 seed Velevan Senthilkumar for a quarter final spot.

The top seeds ever the fray in round two of the mens’s event today whilst the women’s event gets underway also.
