Windsor Cup: Douglas & Elnawasany Gatecrash Quarter Finals

17 August 2023

There were two upsets on day two in the opening PSA World Tour event of the new season at the Windsor Cup yesterday as USA’s Andrew Douglas scored a win over Mexico’s Leonel Cardenas in four games whilst Yahya Elnawasany defeated the returning Abdulla Al Tamimi also 3-1.

Qatar’s Abdulla Al Tamimi was featuring in his first event since recovering from surgery yesterday and although was up against quality opposition in the form of Yahya Elnawasany, was clearly still testing out his movement to see what his body could do. Take nothing away from the young Egyptian however as he capitalised on this and played at a fierce pace to constantly pile the pressure onto the returning No.7 seed which ultimately proved too much. The Egyptian will now face Gregoire Marche for a spot in the semi-finals after the Frenchman overcame Cesar Salazar in four games.

USA’s Andrew Douglas produced a terrific performance in his last 16 encounter with Mexico’s No.5 seed Leonel Cardenas as the took down the World No.27 in four games. There are 31 places between the two in the current PSA rankings but accurate, aggressive play from the American was the key in unlocking opportunities to attack Cardenas and reap the rewards. Douglas is now through to his first event World Tour event quarter final, where he will be up against No.2 seed Youssef Soliman, who overcame wildcard Salah Eltorgman in straight games.

‘Hammer of Thor’ Omar Mosaad survived a big scare in his match with Juan Camilo Vargas to advance to the last eight. Mosaad looked in complete control as he took a commanding 2-0 lead in the match but Vargas came back in strong style to clinch the following two games both 11-9 to force a decider. The Colombian continued his momentum into the fifth game and earned himself three match balls at 10-7. But the experienced Mosaad stayed strong and reeled off the next five points to steal the match away from Vargas winning 12-10 in 71 minutes.

There were also wins for Greg Lobban and Mohamed ElSherbini, who defeated Balázs Farkas and Henry Leung, both in four games. Top seed Tarek Momen also had no trouble in securing his place in the final eight as he defeated Todd Harrity in straight games.

The quarter final action starts in Windsor at 16:30 (GMT-4) and is available to watch LIVE here.
