Bremer Schlüssel: All Top Seeds Progress To Last 8

All seeds made their way through to the quarter finals of the Bremer Schlüssel 2023 yesterday at the Achim-Baden Squash & Fitness Centre as eight matches entertained the German crowd.

Winning Welsh duo from day one Elliot Morris Devred and Owain Taylor were the first players to fall to the seeds on day two as they lost out to No.5 and No.8 seeds Yannick Wilhelmi and James Peach. Switzerland’s Wilhelmi needed four games to overcome Devred whist Peach managed to secure a 3-0 victory over Taylor despite a very tight opening game.

The match of the day came from Israel’s Daniel Poleshchuk and Switzerland’s Robin Gadola, who played out an entertaining 3-2 affair in just under an hour. Poleshchuk took a convincing 2-0 lead over Gadola and looked sure to be advancing in straight games. Gadola responded well and battled back to level the tie at 2-2 and set up a decider. Poleshchuk played the big points well in the decider and managed to close the game out 11-7 to book a place in the quarter finals.

His opponent will be Egypt’s top seed Mazen Gamal. The No.1 seed needed four games to end home hopes in the event as he beat Valentin Rapp in 53 minutes. Gamal won two close opening games 13-11 and 11-8 before Rapp clawed a game back to breathe more life in the match. Gamal regrouped to take the fourth game 11-7 to progress.

There were also wins for the other top four seeds Simon Herbert, Yassin Elshafei and Mahesh Mangaonkar, who all came through their respective matches in under 45 minutes to reach the quarter finals. No.6 seed Viktor Byrtus was the last player to progress as he defeated Andes Ling in four games.
