City of Greater Bendigo International QF: Heo Scores Upset Against Top Seed Joshi

Mingyeong Heo scored the biggest upset in the quarter-finals of the City of Greater Bendigo International after dispatching top seed Urwashi Joshi in straight games.

Forty eight places separate Heo and Joshi in the rankings, and it was the former who triumphed to book her place in the semi-finals.

All three games were close, but Heo was able to pull clear in each game to cause a big upset on the second day of the tournament.

Heo faces her fellow South Korean Yura Choe following her walkover victory against Noor Ul Huda, and there was another shock result with No.2 seed Sophie Fadaely losing to No.6 seed Colette Sultana with the former retiring in the third game.

Meanwhile in the men’s draw, top seed Rowan Damming got the better of No.7 seed Brice Nicolas in a five-game battle to progress to the last four.

Damming, who came into this tournament having lifted the Harcourts KDRE Morrinsville Open last week, was 2-1 up before Nicolas clinched the fourth to send it into a fifth which Damming claimed 11-8 to prevail.

The tournament’s No.4 seed Bryan Lim Tze Kang awaits Damming in the semi-finals, who saw off Amir Amirul 3-0: 11-3, 11-3, 11-4.

Dylan Molinaro defeated his Australian compatriot James Lloyd in straight games, and he will face another countryman in the semi-finals, No.3 seed Nicholas Calvert following his 3-1 victory against Theis Houlberg in the last eight.

The semi-finals of the City of Greater Bendigo International will take place on Saturday July 1.
