Danny Gamble Open SF: Harris Downs Top Seed, Meets Thomson In Final

28 May 2023

The semi-finals saw the first shock of the week at the Danny Gamble Open, as England’s Asia Harris downed the top seed to make the final.

The Englishwoman, the No.3 seed for the Challenger 3 level competition in Canterbury, took on Singapore’s Au Yeong Wai Yhann in the last four.

A tight first game went the way of Harris, with the young Englishwoman taking it 11-9. The second then went to a tie-break, and Harris came through it 12-10 to keep the momentum in her favour. She then dropped just four points in the third game, securing a straight games win to make the final.

The final will see Harris take on No.2 seed Alison Thomson, after the Scot overcame England’s Saran Nghiem in five games. Thomson found herself behind after Nghiem won the third game 11-8, but the Scottish No.3 fought back strongly.

She won the fourth game 11-6 to level the match at two games apiece, before then going on to win a tight deciding game 11-9 to secure the victory. The match lasted 66 minutes, with Thomson making it through to the final.

Asia Harris and Alison Thomson will meet in the final of the Danny Gamble Open on Sunday, May 28 at the Canterbury Squash Rackets Club. You can keep up to date with daily updates from the tournament on the PSA Challenger Tour’s Twitter and Facebook.
