Canadian Women’s Open Day Two: Evening Roundup

Following the afternoon session of the Canadian Women’s Open, Canada’s Hollie Naughton led the charge for the home fans in the evening to reach the quarter finals.

Canadian No.1 Naughton was initially troubled by the pace and accuracy of Egyptian 19-year-old Kenzy Ayman before finding her rhythm to pull away from 4-3 down to an 11-9 winner in game one.

No.5 seed Naughton, roared on by the capacity crowd, seemed increasingly assured as the match progressed, with the World No.18 hitting a number of exciting winners as she took the match in straight games with 11-5 and 11-4 wins.

Afterwards, Naughton said: Hollie Naughton: “I’m very happy to be off in three. You never know what you’re going to get against a young Egyptian. She’s so deadly and you’ve got to be on it from the beginning. I was definitely a bit nervous coming out here and playing in front of this crowd.

“It’s special to have an event here and get this opportunity to play in front of everyone, I’m just happy to be on and off in three and get into my groove for the next round.”

Joining Naughton in the next round is top seed Amanda Sobhy, who made short work of England’s Millie Tomlinson; No.2 seed Salma Hany, who beat Tomlinson’s compatriot Katie Malliff 3-0; and England’s Lucy Beecroft, who recorded a straight-games victory over Saskia Beinhard of Germany.

The quarter finals of the Canadian Women’s Open will be played from 17:30 (GMT-4) tomorrow, 28th March.
