Canadian Women’s Open Day One: Evening Roundup

27 March 2023

Following Zeina Zein’s first World Tour win in the opening match of the afternoon session, Saskia Beinhard of Germany did the same as she ended a run of six consecutive World Tour first round losses with an entertaining comeback against Tessa ter Sluis of the Netherlands.

The World No.64 got the better of ter Sluis after a tiebreak in the first game, before the firepower of the Dutchwoman came to the fore in the second, with the World No.84 blasting herself level with an 11-5 win in six minutes.

The German struggled again in the third, losing her accuracy as ter Sluis moved into the lead with an 11-6 win.

The Dutchwoman seemed to be easing to victory in the fourth game when she took a 5-0 lead, only for her concentration to slip as Beinhard battled back to force the match into a decider with an 11-9 victory before completing the comeback with a hard-fought 11-8 win in the fifth.

“I’m not very happy about my squash performance but I’m very happy about my fighting skills and staying in the match, even though I was very down. I’m relieved to have my first World Tour win!” Beinhard said afterwards.

The German will be joined in the second round by Canada’s Nicole Bunyan, who won 3-1 against Marta Dominguez Fernandez in a match that saw three games go to tie breaks, and England’s Katie Malliff, who recorded a comfortable 3-0 victory over Australia’s Sarah Cardwell.

Round two of the Canadian Women’s Open begins tomorrow, Monday 27 March, from 17:00 (GMT-4)
