Calgary Women’s Week: Turmel Wins All-English Final

13 March 2023

England’s Lucy Turmel claimed the title at the Calgary CFO Consulting Services Women’s Squash Week after beating compatriot Lucy Beecroft in the final.

Turmel came into the Challenger 20 level competition as the tournament’s top seed, and would eventually go on to win her first victory n just over a year.

After an opening round bye, the Englishwoman began her week in the last 16, where she dispatched of Dutch No.1 Tessa ter Sluis in 25 minutes. She dropped just ten points in an 11-6, 11-2, 11-2 victory to get things underway.

That was followed with another straight games victory over a national No.1 The quarter finals saw Turmel defeat Poland’s Karina Tyma in three, before she then went on to come from 2-1 down in the semis. Tomato Ho, the woman she beat to claim her last title in January 2022, was the opponent, and Turmel eventually came through a 77-minute clash, winning 12-10 in the deciding game.

That set up a meeting in the final with compatriot Lucy Beecroft, the No.5 seed. Once again, the World No.33 found herself behind after three games, but fought back strongly. She won the fourth 11-8 before going on to clinch the victory in the fifth game, with an 11-7 scoreline. The victory is the fifth of Turmel’s career, and her biggest to date.
