Guilfoyle Squash Classic: Unseeded Lee Secures Title In Toronto

Charlie Lee’s incredible run in Toronto ended with the Englishman beating Curtis Malik to win the Guilfoyle PSA Squash Classic on Saturday afternoon.

The Englishman started the week as one of the unseeded players in the draw for the Challenger 10 level competition, and having won the E.M. Noll Classic last month as well.

His week started with the tricky task of taking on the Canadian No.1 who was featuring on home soil at the Toronto Cricket, Skating & Curling Club. David Baillargeon took the opening game of their first round contest, but Lee fought back to win in four after exactly an hour.

The Englishman’s form continued with a straight games victory over Hong Kong’s Tsz Kwan Lau before he then defeated No.2 seed Nathan Lake in the semi-finals. The all-English clash saw Lake claim the opening game, but Lee then took control of the contest. Like he did on the opening day in Toronto, the World No.59 fought back to win in four to move through.

The final saw Lee take on No.7 seed Curtis Malik, with his fellow Englishman having also caused a semi-final upset, as he defeated USA’s Todd Harrity, the tournament’s top seed.

Lee was in complete control in the final on Saturday afternoon in Toronto. He won both of the opening two games by an 11-6 scoreline before then taking the third game 11-5 to secure the victory. His win at the Guilfoyle PSA Squash Classic was his second in succession after that victory at the E.M. Noll Classic in Philadelphia last week.
