Guilfoyle Squash Classic QF: Unseeded Lee Through To Last Four

England’s Charlie Lee caused an upset for the second successive day as he moved into the last four of the Guilfoyle PSA Squash Classic.

The Challenger 10 level tournament is taking place at the Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club, and on day one of the competition, Lee knocked out Canadian No.1 David Baillargeon to get his week underway.

On Thursday evening, the Englishman came up against Hong Kong’s Tsz Kwan Lau, the No.4 seed. The Hongkonger came into this event off the back of a strong performance at the Squash On Fire Open in Washington, D.C., but it was Lee who was in the ascendancy in their quarter final contest in Toronto.

The first two games of their quarter final went to tie-breaks, with the World No.59 coming out the victor on both occasions. He took the opener 14-12, before doubling his advantage in the match with a 12-10 win in the second. The third was much easier for the Englishman, who claimed it 11-5 to book his last four spot.

He is one of three English players to make the semi-finals in Toronto, with No.2 seed Nathan Lake being his semi-final opponent on Friday. Lake came through a tricky five-game contest with India’s Abhay Singh in his last eight tie. The Indian fought back from two games down, but Lake was able to regroup and recover, winning the fifth 11-4 to advance to the semis.

The other semi-final on Friday will see England’s Curtis Malik take on top seed Todd Harrity. The American defeated Mexico’s Alfredo Avila in in straight games, while Malik downed Harrity’s compatriot, Christopher Gordon. The Englishman fought back after losing tie-breaks in both the second and third games to win in five.
