Weekend RoundUp: Maiden Honours For Murrills & Dussourd As Gillis Strikes

12 December 2016

n action packed weekend of action on the PSA World Tour saw no less than five tournaments come to a conclusion as England’s Adam Murrills and Frenchman Auguste Dussourd sealed the first silverware of their careers while rising Belgian star Nele Gillis secured the biggest win of her career to date.

Competing on home soil at the PSA M5 Grimsby and Cleethorpes Open Murrills stormed to the title-decider courtesy of consecutive 3-0 wins to meet number one seed Evan Williams, the New Zealander who is currently based in nearby Pontefract.

In the final, the seventh of his career, Murrills twice came from behind to level the match, with an impressive tie-break win in the fourth keeping his hopes alive, and he managed to stay strong during the decisive fifth to take it 11-6 and finally break his tournament duck.

Dussourd meanwhile was competing in the fifth final of his career in the PSA M5 Iran Navy Squash Open and managed to see off top seed Tayyab Aslam in a 77 minute five-game battle to join Murrills in collecting the first title of his career.

Nele Gilis, the Belgian player who has been making strides in the women’s rankings of late, ended her 2016 in fine form as she took the honours at the PSA W10 International des Volcans.

Seeded third for the tournament Gilis produced an upset win the semi-finals to take out Japan’s
Misaki Kobayashi in n impressive 3-1 win to set up a decider with Amanda Landers-Murphy, the New Zealander who took out top seed Millie Tomlinson in a straight games semi-final win. But in the decider it was Gilis who controlled proceedings to come through 3-1 and secure her third, and biggest, tournmanet title to date.

“I’m over the moon to win my third and biggest PSA World Tour title and very happy to finish 2016 on a high!,” said Gilis.

Gilis wasn’t the only Belgian to taste success over the weekend as a huge fight back from Jan van den Herrewegen saw him take the spoils at the Sutton Coldfield International.

The World No.104 found himself 0-2 down in the final against England’s Michael Harris, the World No.228, but put together an inspired resurgence that saw him change the pace at 6-6 in the third game and force a series of errors from the Englishman to get on the board.

After levelling Van der Herrewegen then stormed out to a 6-1 lead in the fifth to put the title beyond his opponent and compete an impressive turnaround victory.

In the other tournament to come to a close this weekend, the Lifetime Florida Open, it was Welshman Peter Creed who proved to good for the opposition as he secured the 7th title of his career with a 3-1 win over Angus GIllams.
