Adel Keeps Knockout Run Going At Carol Weymuller Open

Egypt’s Yathreb Adel secured another upset win on Friday evening in Brooklyn, as she got the better of World No.13 Salma Hany in straight games.

Adel, who has been as high as Hany’s current World Ranking in the past, showed her class throughout the contest, and also doubled down on her win over her compatriot at the Everbright Securities International Hong Kong Squash Open just six weeks earlier.

The first two games were very tight, with the second going to a tie-break. Adel was able to come through it, winning it 12-10 to double her advantage in the contest. From there, the third was a procession, with Hany only able to muster two points, as the No.3 seed bowed out of the competition.

Adel will now face the tournament’s top seed, Olivia Fiechter, in Saturday’s semi-finals, after the home favourite and World No.10 defeated Malaysia’s Aifa Azman. Fiechter was in fine form in the early exchanges, taking a quick two-game lead. The Malaysian, who won her home open as a wildcard in 2021, fought back to win the third, but Fiechter regrouped, taking the fourth 11-7 to advance to the semis.

In the bottom half of the draw, No.2 seed Georgina Kennedy continued her return from injury in fine form. She dropped just eight points in a convincing 11-3, 11-2, 11-3 victory over Egypt’s Salma Eltayeb to make it into the last four.

The Englishwoman, who missed out on the Women’s World Team Championships through injury, will now take on Japanese No.1 Satomi Watanabe. The World No.32 came from two games down to defeat Egypt’s Hana Moataz 12-10 in the fifth, getting revenge for her loss in the Richmond Open final nine months ago.
