J.P. Tournament of Champions 2023: Preview & How to Watch Live

17 January 2023

The first Platinum squash event of the year gets underway tomorrow as the 2023 J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions (TOC) returns.

This year’s TOC, which takes place for the 25th time under the iconic chandeliers of Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall in New York, will see 96 of the world’s best squash players in each draw compete for their share of the $360,000 USD prize pot, which is split evenly between the men’s and women’s events.

Five further venues will be utilised at this year’s TOC, with action taking place at Grand Central Terminal, Harvard Club of New York, New York Athletic Club, Harmonie Club, The River Club of New York and Nicol Squash Club.

Action from the glass court at Grand Central Terminal will be streamed live on SQUASH.TV from round two on Thursday 19th January, with the channels of the PSA’s broadcast partners also showing action from the semi-finals onwards.

Squash player Mostafa Asal hits a forehand shot against Mohamed ElShorbagy in the 2023 Houston Open Squash Championship final.
New World No.1 squash player Mostafa Asal (right) will have to hold off a strong challenge from Mohamed ElShorbagy (left) and Paul Coll to keep his place at the top.

In the men’s event, the stakes could scarcely be higher, with a potential three-way battle for the World No.1 ranking on the cards!

With defending champion Ali Farag still injured, new World No.1 Mostafa Asal – who yesterday annexed Farag’s throne – will no doubt travel to New York confident of earning the points he needs to stay top.

However, an exit in the quarter-finals would leave Mohamed ElShorbagy and Paul Coll with the opportunity to reclaim the World No.1 ranking, with Coll also able to go top if he wins the tournament and Asal goes out in the semi-final.

ElShorbagy, who last topped the rankings in August 2021, would be the first player representing England to be World No.1 since 2014, following ElShorbagy’s switch from Egypt last year.

Coll, meanwhile, would return to the top of the pile for the first time since October 2022.

World No.1 Nouran Gohar

In the women’s draw, World No.1 and top seed Nouran Gohar will look to defend her 2022 title as she closes in on an unbroken year at World No.1.

Should the tournament go to seedings, she’ll take on Nour El Sherbini in what would be a thrilling final, with El Sherbini targeting a first major title since winning the CIB PSA World Tour Finals in June of last year.

With the seeded players receiving a bye tomorrow, the home crowd’s attentions may focus on the four US representatives in action tomorrow.

In the men’s draw, US No.1 Shahjahan Khan plays England’s Nick Wall, US No.2 Todd Harrity faces Qatar’s Abdulla Al Tamimi and US No.3 Faraz Khan plays Switzerland’s Dimitri Steinmann.

Wildcards Dillon Huang and Hollis Robertson take on Wall’s compatriot Patrick Rooney and France’s Sebastien Bonmalais, respectively.

In the women’s draw, there’s another USA v England battle as wildcard and New York resident Carol Fouts goes up against World No.23 Jasmine Hutton, while Anna Shumway plays Egypt’s Nadine Shahin.

The top four US players in the women’s draw all receive byes to round two, with Sabrina Sobhy and Olivia Fiechter playing on Thursday and Olivia Clyne and Amanda Sobhy playing on Friday. Both Fiechter and Clyne already know their opponents: Fiechter goes up against Gohar, while Clyne plays Canada’s Hollie Naughton.

The J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions gets underway on Wednesday, January 18. All the action from Grand Central Terminal, which starts a day later, will be shown live on SQUASHTV, while the semi-finals and finals will also be shown on the channels of PSA’s broadcast partners.
