Weekend Round Up: Canadian Duo Naughton & Sachvie Strike As 8 Titles Claimed

7 November 2016

During a weekend that saw the PSA Men’s World Championship and Women’s Wadi Degla Open come to a close there was also joy for Canadian pair Hollie Naughton and Nick Sachvie as they claimed the biggest titles on offer elsewhere during a weekend that saw a total of eight tournaments come to a close on the PSA World Tour.

While Karim Abdel Gawad and Raneem El Welily took the spoils during a mammoth week of action in Egypt it was unseeded Sachvie who put together the run of his career.

The 24-year-old, playing in the 26th event of his career, stormed through the field taking out number five seed Michael McCue 3-2 and number four seed Danish Atlas Khan 3-0 before securing a place in the final after top seeded Arturo Salazar retired in the semi-final clash. Up against Colombian qualifier Juan Camilo Vargas, who had also impressed to defeat the number two, number eight and number seven seeds to reach the title-decider in just the third event of his career, McCue dominated to take the spoils and claim his first silverware.

Joining Sachvie is sealing Canadian success was Hollie Naughton, the 22-year-old World No.47, who lived up to her billing as the top seed to come through the draw at the W10 Nicola Wealth Open to take the title for the loss of just two games.

Naughton, who was born in England before moving to Canada as a youngster, easily dispatched Reyna Pacheco in her opening match before coming through a testing quarter-final battle with Chloe Mesic, taking it 3-2.

But she went from strength-to-strength from then on, easing past Nicole Bunyan before controlling proceedings against Nada Abbas to take the title, just the second of her career.

Naughton wasn’t the only player to claim their second PSA World Tour title over the weekend as Spaniard Carlos Cornes Ribadas also tasted success for just the second time in his career, winning the M5 Château-Arnoux Open in France.

Competing in the 76th tournament of his career the 27-year-old World No.81 went into the event, which featured a strong field full of promising talents such as Geoffrey Demont and George Parker, as the top seed and duly lived up to his billing as he secured a semi-final berth without dropping a game.

Ribadas then reached the final after semi-final opponent George Parker retired injured in the fourth game of what was a gruelling and highly competitive last four battle before then securing the title courtesy of a gargantuan five-game encounter with Christophe Andre.

The Spaniard found himself a game behind to the Frenchman before coming through a colossal second game, taking it 18-16, to restore parity. After splitting the following two games to set up an all-or-nothing decider that went all the way to the wire it was Ribabas who held his nerve in a final game tie-break to take the spoils in a hard fought victory.

Meanwhile Australian Zac Alexander continued his domination of Australian tournaments as he collected an eighth title of the 2016 alone at the Carins Open.

Alexander has triumphed in all but one tournament played on home soiling the calendar year, with his second round exit at the Australian Open the only blemish on his record, and he continued to impress as he romped to glory at the PSA M5 tournament after securing consecutive straight game wins to set up a final decider with Steve Finitsis – the former World No.45 who retired from full time play earlier this year.

In a 60minute decider Alexander came through 3-1, dropping the third game to the experienced Finitsis, to claim the title while it was New Zealand’s Amanda Landers-Murphy who took the spoils in the women’s event – her third consecutive win in Australia.

After winning the Queensland Open and Mackay Open the 25-year-old extended her winning streak to 12-matches as she came through the field, defeating top seeded Ho Tze-Lok in the process, to lift her ninth career title.

The final winner on an action-packed weekend of competition was experienced Dutchman Piedro Schweertman as the 33-year-old World No.78 triumphed at the M5 Herzliya Autumn Tournament.

Victory over Baptiste Masotti in the title-decider ensured the affable Schweertman collected the 11th winners check of his career.
