Costa Rica Open: Enriquez and Tovar Victorious

Guatemala’s Josue Enriquez and Colombian Laura Tovar took the titles at the SACC Costa Rica Open this week.

Enriquez came into the men’s Challenger 5 tournament as the top seed, and he started his week with a straight games victory over Costa Rican wildcard nerds Echeverria, before then getting the better of compatriot Luis Quisquinay, the No.7 seed, in the last eight.

The Guatemalan then defeated Mexico’s Leo Vargas, the tournament’s surprise package, in the semi-finals to set up a meeting with Argentina Jeremias Azana in the final. He lost the first game 13-11, but battled back to win the second game 11-8. From there, he was in cruise control, dropping just six points over the next two games to win in four.

The women’s title was claimed by Colombian Laura Tovar, who dropped just a single game en route to the victory. She started her week with a win over Guatemalan Darlyn Sandoval, before then beating Mexico’s Diana Gasca in straight games in the semis.

The final saw Tovar take on No.8 seed Lucia Bautista, and the two Colombians were level after two games. However, as the match went on, Tovar was able to win the important points, taking the third game 11-8 before then also clinching a tight fourth game 11-9 to secure the victory.
