Jeu de Paume RD1: Rakaybi Enjoys Dream Debut

Egypt’s Fareda Rakaybi took a surprise win on debut at the Open Feminin du Jeu de Paume, securing a win in her first outing on the Tour.

The young Egyptian came up against Germany’s Aylin Gunsav, the tournament’s No.5 seed, and wasted no time in getting her Tour account underway. She claimed victory in just 20 minutes, dropping only 11 points in an 11-1, 11-5, 11-5 victory on Friday afternoon.

Rakaybi will now face No.3 seed Taba Taghavi in the quarter finals in Paris, after the Frenchwoman came from behind to defeat Egypt’s Nour Ramy. Taghavi lost the first on a tie-break 13-11, but fought back to win the next three games, all within three points, to secure the win.

Elsewhere, Ireland’s Breanne Flynn, the No.2 seed, regrouped from losing the second game of her contest with Catarina Nunes to take a four-game victory. She lost the second 11-3, but than fought back to win the third on a tie-break 16-14. That gave her the momentum to then go on and win the match in four.
