Concourse Athletic Club Open RD1: Trio Cause Upsets

There was a trio of upsets on the second day in Atlanta, with Henrik Mustonen, Darosham Khan and Finnlay Withington all advancing to the last eight.

England’s Withington took on No.8 seed Saeed Abdul in the second round of the Challenger 10 level competition, and he dropped just 16 points across his three-game contest with the Pakistani. Withington won 11-9, 11-2, 11-5 in 39 minutes to secure his quarter final spot.

Also winning in three to cause an upset was Finnish No.1 Henrik Mustonen. The World No.203 downed Guatemala’s No.7 seed Ricardo Toscano in just 28 minutes. He won 11-3, 11-3, 11-6 to book his spot in the quarter finals in Atlanta.

The other man to cause an upset on Thursday evening was Canadian Darosham Khan. He also defeated a Guatemalan, in No.4 seed Josue Enriquez, coming through in four games. The pair were level through two, having both taken an 11-7 win apiece. However, from there it was all Khan, with the Canadian taking both the third and fourth games to book his place in the last eight.

Elsewhere, top seed Faraz Khan won the all-American battle with Jamie Ruggiero, while No.6 seed Aly Hussein came through the longest match of the day. He played for 65 minutes against fellow Egyptian Mohamed Nabil, winning in four games. England’s Sam Todd downed Jonah Bryant, with Guatemala’s Alejandro Enriquez and Pakistani Muhammad Asim Khan also safely assuring themselves of quarter final places.

The quarter finals of the Concourse Athletic Club Open will take place on Friday, October 14. The four matches at the Concourse Athletic Club will see the semi-finalists set at the Challenger 10 level tournament.
