Welsh No.1 Joel Makin Awarded AJ Bell British Squash Grand Prix Wildcard

Welsh No.1 and National Champion Joel Makin is set to become the first Welshman ever to compete in the main draw at the AJ Bell British Squash Grand Prix after the 21-year-old was granted the wildcard for this year’s championship to be staged at the National Squash Centre in Manchester from 2nd to 5th December.

The 21 year-old Welshman, who recently endeared himself to SQUASHTV fans with a series of giant killing performances in reaching the quarter-finals of the Squash Open de Nantes in France, will find himself up against a stellar line-up at this year’s AJ Bell British Squash Grand Prix, which will include three-time World Champion Nick Matthew.

“I really appreciate the opportunity to be given the wildcard for this year’s AJ Bell British Squash Grand Prix and to play against some of the best players in the world,” said Makin.

“This is the sort of tournament that I aim to play in regularly in the future and it’s great to get a chance to gain this experience this early in my career.”

Makin was a qualifier during the Squash Open de Nantes but went all the way to the quarter-finals before losing out to England’s Daryl Selby. The World No.69 has already recorded impressive wins on the PSA World Tour against the likes of New Zealand No.1, Paul Coll, United States No.1 Todd Harrity and rising English talents Declan James, Richie Fallows and Charles Sharpes.

“Joel is a very talented young player who has impressed with his progression over the past few years and we’re pleased to grant him wildcard status at this year’s AJ Bell Squash Grand Prix,” said Tournament Promoter Paul Walters.

“The experience of playing against some of the most talented and most experienced heads on the PSA World Tour will be invaluable in Joel’s future development and he has all the skills necessary to cause an upset when the competition gets underway this December.”
