Oracle Netsuite Open 2022: Semi-Finals – The Stats & How To Watch Live

3 October 2022

It’s semi-finals day of the Oracle Netsuite Open 2022 in San Francisco as the last remaining players battle it out in the last best-of-three matches for a spot in tomorrow’s finals at Pier 70, Building 12.

In both draws, the top four seeds are safely through after entertaining quarter-final bouts, with men’s top seed Diego Elias of Peru kicking off the action at 17:30 when he takes on No.4 seed Marwan ElShorbagy of Egypt.

This is followed by women’s top seed and US No.1 Amanda Sobhy’s North American derby against Canada’s No.4 seed Hollie Naughton.

The second men’s semi-final pits Egyptian No.3 seed Mazen Hesham against England’s No.2 seed Mohamed ElShorbagy, before Egypt’s No.3 seed Farida Mohamed brings play to a close against New Zealand’s No.2 seed Joelle King.

The opening match of the evening pits Peruvian top seed Diego Elias against Egypt’s No.4 seed Marwan ElShorbagy. The pair are familiar opponents on the tour, with today the 11th meeting between the two. The record book, though, makes for grim reading for the Egyptian, with Elias enjoying a healthy 9-1 head-to-head record.

In the pair’s last meeting, which came just two weeks ago at the CIB Egyptian Open, Elias overcame ElShorbagy in an entertaining battle that saw the Egyptian take the lead before eventually falling 3-2.

Can ‘the Jackal’ earn a first win over Elias since 2016?

The first women’s semi-final is a North American derby between the USA’s Amanda Sobhy and Canada’s Hollie Naughton.

Sobhy, the US No.1 and last home player left in the tournament, enjoys playing in San Francisco, with the 29-year-old winning the tournament last year and in 2015.

Naughton, meanwhile, is playing in the semi-final for the first time in her career, with her previous best finish a last 16 place in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021.

The Canadian goes into the match as the underdog, with Sobhy enjoying a 2-0 head-to-head record. Their last match came on US soil, too, with the American easing past the Canadian 3-0 in 29 minutes in the 2022 Windy City Open.

The second men’s semi-final is an intriguing clash between the mercurial Mazen Hesham and former World No.1 Mohamed ElShorbagy.

Despite Hesham’s form of late, which has seen the 28-year-old rise to a career-best World No.8, the 28-year-old is yet to record a victory over ElShorbagy on the tour, with the England No.1 enjoying a perfect 7-0 record.

Their last match also came in a best-of-three format competition, with ElShorbagy downing Hesham 2-1 in this summer’s World Tour Finals. Will ‘the Beast’ inflict more hurt on Hesham?

In the day’s final match, Egypt’s World No.18 Farida Mohamed looks to upset World No.5 seed Joelle King of New Zealand.

Despite the 20-year-old Mohamed’s lower ranking, she enjoys a positive head-to-head record against the Kiwi, with the Egyptian winning their first two meetings 3-2. King won the last meeting 3-2, too, a feisty affair at the Black Ball Open in March in which Mohamed attempted to battle through a clear injury before eventually retiring in the fifth game.

Will this one go all the way, too?
