Louisville Open SF: Avila Survives 100 Minute Thriller

10 September 2022

The final of the Sam Aguiar Louisville Open is set, with Mexico’s Alfredo Avila and the USA’s Timothy Brownell, the top two seeds, both making it through in very differing circumstances.

Avila took on Egypt’s Aly Hussein in the semi-finals of the tournament, held at the Louisville Boat Club, and it was an encounter that turned both ways, and lasted exactly 100 minutes.

The first two games saw just seven points taken by the eventual loser, with Hussein winning the first 11-3, before an Avila retort in the second game, one he took 11-4. The Egyptian then took the lead again with a tie-break win, 14-12, in the third, but then failed to score a single point in the fourth game. The Mexican then went on to carry that momentum into the fifth, winning it 11-8 to advance to the final.

He will now face the tournament’s top seed and home favourite, Timothy Brownell, in the final on Saturday afternoon, after the American came through his last four clash with Egypt’s Seif Shenawy in straight games. He dropped just 13 points across the three games, winning in 28 minutes to advance to the final.

The final of the Sam Aguiar Louisville Open will take place on Saturday, September 10 between USA’s Timothy Brownell and Mexico’s Alfredo Avila. You can keep up to date with live scores from the final of the Challenger 10 level competition here.
