Tasmanian Open QF: Gadola and Tsukue Gatecrash Semis

The surprise results kept coming at the City of Devonport Tasmanian Open, with Switzerland’s Robin Gadola and Japan’s Ryunosuke Tsukue both taking down seeded players to reach the last four of the tournament.

The pair came into the men’s Challenger 10 level competition unseeded, with Gadola having already taken down the top seed, Muhammad Asim Khan, in the second round. He came up against compatriot Yannick Wilhelmi, the No.7 seed, in Friday’s quarter finals, and after going behind, he fought back to win three straight games to defat his fellow Swiss player, winning in four. He will now face Malaysia’s No.3 seed Addeen Idrakie in the semis.

In the bottom half of the men’s draw, Japanese No.2 Ryunosuke Tsukue took on No.5 seed Lwamba Chileshe, and the World No.107 required just 26 minutes on court to overcome the Kiwi, dropping just 14 points en route to the semis. Tsukue will take on No.2 seed, and last week’s Volkswagen Bega Open winner, Tsz Kwan Lau, in the last four.

After a surprising second day in the women’s Challenger 10 event, which saw the top seed among those knocked out, the quarter finals all went the way of the higher seeded player on Friday evening at the Devonport Squash Club. There will be Australian hopes in both semi-finals, as Alex Haydon takes on Chan Yiwen, while Jessica Turnbull will face Tsz-Wing Tong.

The semi-finals of the City of Devonport Tasmanian Open will take place on Saturday, September 10, with the last four in both draws aiming to make it through to the finals of their respective competitions.
