Gohar and Max Lee Named August Players of the Month

World Junior Champion Nouran Gohar and World No.17 Max Lee have been named as the PSA Players of the Month for August after both players impressed during last week’s Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Open.

18-year-old Gohar lifted her first World Series title after a whirlwind week of action saw her power to the title just a matter of weeks after winning the World Junior Championship for the second time.

The Egyptian began her tournament with comfortable wins over Olivia Blatchford and World No.9 Alison Waters, before overcoming World No.2 Laura Massaro in a brutal five-game quarter-final clash.

Eight-time World Champion Nicol David was the next player to stand in Gohar’s way, with the Malaysian boasting a 53-match unbeaten run at this tournament which had seen her win 10 straight titles at the Hong Kong Open.

But an immaculate performance from Gohar saw her end the 33-year-old’s Hong Kong reign and she followed that up by recovering from a game down to defeat United States No.1 Amanda Sobhy in the final to break her World Series title duck.

Gohar’s triumph also sees her top the Women’s PSA Road to Dubai Standings, where only the top eight players will qualify for a berth at the climactic season-ending Dubai PSA World Series Finals.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong No.1 Lee was also in fine form in the Men’s event as he rode the wave of fervent home support to reach a maiden World Series semi-final.

After a routine 3-0 victory against namesake Joe Lee in the opening round, Max Lee went on to record superb victories over Egyptian duo Ali Farag and Fares Dessouky to set up a last four fixture against a third Egyptian on the trot in Ramy Ashour.

A vociferous crowd backed Lee to the hilt, but the 28-year-old fell just short against the three-time World Champion to bring an end to his unlikely title charge.
